Do You Follow the Half-Tank Rule for Refueling?

Do You Follow the Half-Tank Rule for Refueling?

When do you usually fill up your gas tank?

Some motorists wait to refuel until they're near empty, while others swear by the half tank rule. Refueling when you have half a tank of gas left minimizes the risk that you'll run out of fuel in an emergency or during a traffic jam. Drivers who follow the half tank rule don't need to add "running out of gas" as a concern in these scenarios vs drivers who are already under half a tank. In March 2021, we saw firsthand how fuel can quickly become scarce when there were sudden gasoline shortages on the East Coast. Panic buying made gasoline scarce and resulted in long lines at the stations. No one ever expects something like this to happen, but it can. In rural areas where there's only one gas station around for many miles, it can be tough if the station suddenly becomes low on fuel and you were depending on it for the miles ahead.

Whether you follow the half tank rule or not, you can fuel up and hit the road at Jimmy's Tires. Our on-site, self service gas station is just the place you need to stop at when your engine is low or at the half tank marker for fuel.
